The Beginings of Modern Day Eventing

Holy crap, check out this video:

Calvary

These guys are flying.

I wonder if it helped the horses' courage to be in large groups while galloping at breakneck speeds over giant obstacles? Seems like if one stopped he'd pretty much be rammed from behind. Might instill a "go or die" element to the training?

It's sobering to think these horses were being trained to charge into battle under fire. I can't imagine doing a BN cross country course while dodging bullets. Not cool man, not cool!

What impressed me in the videos was how good the riders' positions were, rider after rider - excellent balanced seats, legs that stayed put, close to the horse but no chair seats, and wow, look at those releases over the fences - I don't think I saw a single rider hanging on the reins or hitting the horse in the mouth.

I agree Kate, the riders were really excellent.

WOW..steeplechase!
What an amazing set of calvery videos. Those men were perfectly balanced..the hands and legs, like Kate noticed..never moved..even in some of the bad take offs!
Thanks for finding this!

Hey! Yeah, I'm in Idaho, greater Boise area. (Lesser? Ha.) If you're ever in the area, call, text, or email and we can play ponies. :-)

Holly heck, Megan. That's crazy. Though both rider and horse looked "cool, calm, and collected". I'm sorry, I had to quote Daniel Stewart. :)

Amazing, the partnership between man and horse...how they have "carried us", literally, through history.
